Come on people, the tracks are clearly visible. Don't stop anywhere close to them. If the light is red or there is another car between you and the light, then don't even cross the tracks. Stop behind the tracks until the light turns green and you can cross freely. The city should ban right turns on red near the train tracks just to emphasize how stupid this is.

So .. what happened here? The Caltrain Twitter feed doesn't offer any details, other than the car was empty when it was hit by the train. Does that mean the driver saw the train coming, got out of the car, and stood by watching the train hit the car?

Was there a mechanical problem with the car--so that it couldn't move?

It's a shame that Caltrain doesn't install surveilance cameras at the at-grade crossings so that they have a good idea of how intelligently people are abiding by the rules for safely using these crossings. At least the basic question as to how long this vehicle was on the tracks could be accuately answered.
