City names Apps Challenge finalists

Original post made on Mar 14, 2014

Some good ideas here, but the one that I think is heads up winner is the parking app. Just what we need and fits the civic engagement requirement best.

Resident,
I would suggest that the biking app is the clear winner for the same reasons you mention.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. The bike app is also a good idea, but I don't think the winner will be decided by votes on here.

Are these apps that actually work or just conceptual? If they do actually work, can we download and run them somehow?

Hi everyone,

We welcome comments on our two finalist app proposals.
(note: PAAS = Palo Alto Animal Services shelter)

We also encourage any of you who care about animals and love tech to consider joining our team! It will be a lot of fun, and worth doing.

Our team deeply cares about homeless pets, so all of our proposals are ways to use tech to improve the welfare of shelter animals, starting with the Palo Alto Animal Services (PAAS) shelter. We chose two major areas where we felt tech could make a major difference:
Improved marketing and visibility of adoptable animals in the shelter
Increased revenue for the shelter

Here are all of our app proposals:

Here is a summary of each of them with our two finalists apps at the top of the list. Note that while we are initially focused on PAAS, all of our apps could be used by shelters around the country, even the world:

* "Adopt Me!" - marketing app for PAAS adoptable animals
* "Dogs in the Neighborhood!" – social and dog licensing revenue app for PAAS
"Canella's Voice" - urgent animal adoption app for PAAS animals at risk of euthanasia
"Pets in Pictures, PIP!" - marketing app for PAAS adoptable animals
"The Well-Named Town" - marketing and revenue app for PAAS
"Mobile App for Dog License Registration" - revenue app for PAAS
"Hack the Shelter" - use existing internet services & apps to improve PAAS operations
