A feeling of love, happiness and community filled the room when first grade students from Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School made a special visit to Moldaw Residences. The children brought smiles to the seniors’ faces by singing songs and hand-delivering sweet treats as part of a Purim holiday celebration. The gifts of cookies and cakes were part of Miscloach Manot which is the tradition of giving food to friends, neighbors and relatives on Purim. Twenty students spent time singing holiday songs, visiting and presenting goodies to the residents at Moldaw.

“Everyone felt a sense of fulfillment and love when the children were here,” said Miki Raver, lifestyles director at Moldaw Residences. “The intergenerational relationship brings true joy and satisfaction to our residents. We welcome the students and their families any time they want to visit.”

A first grade teacher at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School approached Moldaw Residences to collaborate on the event that helped integrate the students into the community. The school has service learning within its educational program which combines classroom instruction with real life experiences.

“We believe that it is important to connect the generations and teach the children to respect their elders,” said Donna Seidel, first grade teacher at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School. “We also like to show the students how to take care of others and look beyond themselves. This fun experience taught them some valuable lessons.”

The holiday of Purim commemorates a story in the Book of Esther. Haman, an advisor to King Ahasuerus of Persia, wanted to annihilate all of the Jewish people. Queen Esther and her Uncle Mordecai were able to stop his plan and save the Jewish people from destruction. Kids often times dress up in costumes, hold parades and partake in large feasts to celebrate the holiday.
