Costs of home repair and cleanup from Palo Alto flood

I am interested in getting a ballpark estimate of the work and cost incurred by persons whose homes were flooded in the last flood in Palo Alto. My purpose is in getting a reasonable amount of flood insurance.
Floors, carpets, rugs, furniture, wallboard, electrical(?), cleanup, and what else? I am assuming slowly rising water to a depth of 12 inches (more?), remaining for about 24 hours (more?), and that there is no damage due to force of moving water or by debris carried by the water (reasonable?).
I'd appreciate any information that people would be willing to share.

Carl, the water did not reach my first floor, fortunately, it missed by about two inches. I assume next time things would be worse, due to the increased building upstream covering areas where water could sink in as opposed to winding up in the creek, and some project of East Palo Alto's that I remember reading was estimated to raise the water level for the same type of flood by a "negligable six inches."

My recollection is I spent about $3000, due to damage to the stuff that was under the house (an old floor furnace and the hot water heater which was in a small semi-basement area. There was no real basement), and power tools and stuff stored in the garage and storage area, both of which did flood.

Fortunately it did not reach high enough on my car to do damage, another thing to think about.

There was also a tremendous amount of work which I did myself mucking mud out from the semi-basement and getting it away from the edges of the house and then scrubbing the house lower sides down. Also, restoring the yard. I took two weeks of vacation time from work, and then continued to work on this for I think it was a couple of months afterward.

If I had hired someone to do this, it woud have been much more expensive.

So figure a lot of work and time besides money, and then ask the idiot city council why they didn't have the guts to just get machinery out there to take down the Chaucer St. bridge the day after the floor.

That's a great question. Bet the insurance companies know exactly how much. That info should be public so we don't pay for over-insuring.
