The year 2012 in film Movies, posted by Editor, Palo Alto Online, on Jan 4, 2013 at 1:20 pm
From a pint-sized girl surviving storms on the wrong side of the levee to a CIA agent planning to rescue a band of hostages, the stories that played out on the silver screen in 2012 were full of heroes small and large.

Neighbor: According to the schedule I have, "Amour" is set to open at either the Guild or the Aquarius on Friday, Jan. 18. As far as "Silver Linings Playbook," that was one we unfortunately were not able to review the week it was released because of scheduling conflicts. For what it's worth, I saw the movie about three weeks after it opened and was very impressed (see my write-up about the film in today's Weekly).

Is it deliberate that most news stories on Palo Alto Online have the ability to be responded to, while I have not seen any movie reviews that have this ability. One has to deliberately create a new post in order to discuss or speak to any given movie?

I believe that 4 of peters choices and 1 of Susan's never played in theatres in this area. Too bad. I remember a numbers of years ago that the Landmark chain wants to build a multiplex at the Stanford Shopping Center, but the local "too much traffic" crowd shot it down. It is really sad how few venues ther are here for art house type films and the ones we have (Aquarius and Guild) are substandard and unfortable

Neighbor: Addendum to my earlier post -- my A&E editor tells me "Amour" is now scheduled to open next Friday, Jan. 11. Still not sure whether it will be at the Aquarius or the Guild though (my guess is the Guild).
Anon.: When the movie times/review database was built it did not include a Town Square/commenting component for technical reasons. However, each week we do post two "movie features" (which are often reviews) that hover at the top of the Movies page above the times. You can comment at the bottom of those reviews/features in the same way you could a news story.

Tyler, I noticed that comments were not enabled for "Life Of Pi" which I would have loved to hear people's reactions to and tried to get a conversation going on. No takers though. There was a lot to that unique movie.

Thanks for the info Mr Hanley -- but
--- Even though the reviewer missed a deadline during/near opening week of "Silver Linings Playbook," why not provide a review now? (Stinkers like "Parental Guidance" or the Tom Cruise nonsence got immediate review? How about for a quality movie?)
--- Previews of "Amour" have been shown for so long at local theaters (for several mos. Since September?) that it wasn't clear if the film would even be shown in Palo Alto/Menlo Park.

Am I the only one who thought "Argo" was completely overrated? Sure it was decent, but I have no idea why it was in theaters for so long or why two of you have them in your top 5. It was filled with rehashed Hollywood cliche and overly long "battling my inner demons" scenes with Ben Affleck. I probably see about 30 movies in the theater a year (not as many as you all to be sure), but this wouldn't have even made my top 20.
