Who is Peter Cao Ming and Why?

Original post made by Resident, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Nov 8, 2012

Who is this character who keeps taking over various threads and what does he expect? More importantly, how can he be prevented from doing so? It seems that locking threads to registered users only does nothing to deter him.

It proves the point that locking threads to registered users only does nothing to improve the quality of posts, as we already know.

In fact locking threads does not prevent anyone from making inappropriate comments as has been shown by one registered user who obviously made an inappropriate comment to prove the fact and subsequently thanked the editors for deleting part of his comment as he only did it to prove the point.

Whether this thread gets hijacked or not, and whether this thread itself gets deleted altogether by the editors, the point is that the forum is a public debating place for many of us who may not get the opportunity to debate local issues and we don't like it being taken over like this. It may not be perfect but it is the best we have (or at least I don't know of a better one). Thanks to the editors for trying to get rid of PCM, but please don't lock threads to get rid of him as it does not work. It just stops the majority of us from being able to debate also.

Resident,

As you point out, our options are limited when dealing with a disruptive poster such as the person identified as "Peter Cao Ming." We can limit posters to those who are registered, but if the person registers our only options are to block his/her IP address (which can be circumvented by skilled computer users by simply refreshing the IP address)or deleting posts as they occur.

This problem is obviously not unique to Town Square, but we are more aggressive about dealing with disruptive posters than most web forums. Our experience is that these posters eventually give up if we are promptly deleting their posts and depriving them of the attention they are seeking.

I'm sorry that it causes disruption for others. We don't lock threads to discourage these people, however. When we lock a thread it is generally because the discussion has deteriorated to name-calling and any meaningful dialogue has run its course.

I googled Peter Cao Ming's name a couple of weeks ago. He was once a Stanford researcher, and apparently convinced that Germans and people of German ancestry, are after him. He is also convinced that a Stanford student who committed suicide a few years ago was murdered by Germans, and that Angela Merkel was complicit in it.

Why also does a Parisian fashion designer named Isabel Marant continue to post lengthy threads advertising her clothing and shoes in French and/or very poor English? Her posts often claim she is a resident of Barron Park, which she most certainly is not.

The people who post here probably are not interested in her in the first place. In the second place, her fashions are ridiculously expensive. I don't think that even Palo Alto is elite enough for her prices. Maybe Hillsborough...

Must've worked. No Peter Cao Ming posts lately.
