'Average' Palo Alto students rank high statewide
Palo Alto Schools & Kids, posted by Editor, Palo Alto Online, on Nov 5, 2009 at 8:50 pm

"Average" students in Palo Alto may be smarter than they think: They are competing in a "rarefied" atmosphere laden with high achievers, school board members said Tuesday night.

First off, I felt that this whole article didn't really have a main concise point. It sort of went everywhere and anywhere, making it hard to read and to visualize what exactly Kenrick wants to tell us.

However, I'm unclear about what this statistic is supposed to say. That we shouldn't push kids to do well in their schools or because they'll "still be smarter than other kids in the nation?" Sure, maybe they do score higher and are better educated, but for me, at least, the whole point of going to school is to learn as much as you can.

I'm a student at Paly, btw.

K,

I think the idea is to highlight that kids are getting a really good education in Palo Alto, whether they are at the top or the bottom.

How much parents push or kids push, and why, is also part of the topic, but that's more of a debate and there are no easy conclusions about it, other than that it should be within healthy bounds for all students.

'Average' Palo Alto students rank high statewide. That's pathetic. in a global economy our students should be the best in the world not just above average in the State.
