Wasting time on city payroll
Palo Alto Issues, posted by Vic, a resident of the Ventura neighborhood, on Sep 25, 2006 at 6:26 pm

Sept 25, 2006

11am: Arrived Mitchell Park and observed orange shirt Utility worker socializing with two park maintenance workers.

12Noon: The group finally breaks up after 1 plus hour of chatting. Park workers go about in their little cart together scooping up trash. The utility scoots to a shady spot in the parking lot with his truck and begins to munch on a sandwich.

12:04pm: We go home shaking our heads in disgust.

Anyone else observe roving city workers on their cells, reading the paper, or snoozing in their trucks?

Maybe the workers were talking about ways to save the city money, or having an impromtu planning meeting. How do you know what they were discussing.

Perhaps you have too much time on your hands. Perhaps you might consider that city workers are not chattel for you to spy on and criticize at a whim.

Quizas! Quizas! Quizas!

I can understand how it can be frustrating to see a city worker sleeping in their truck, etc. But remember they have an hour for lunch and I believe they get to 15 minute breaks a day as well. From time to time I have seen our public works staff take a snooze during their lunch break. Their vechicle is their office so they use it for breaks, naps, etc. If you truly concerned then take some action, write down the license plate number of the truck and contact the corrent department in the City to discuss your concerns.
