Any satisfied DirectBuyer out there?
Around Town, posted by Dissatisfied, a resident of Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Aug 15, 2006 at 9:44 pm

Every time I pass by DirectBuy (located in Mt View on San Antonio at 101) I try to figure out what if anything is going on. This evening, I passed by again and noticed more than half a dozen cars in the back parking lot. I thought to myself, my goodness, are people falling for this high-pressure, highly secretive, expensive membership deal?

Let's hear from any satisfied members, if there are any?

I suspect we will hear from many more dissatisfied members, like this one at Web Link.

I'm not surprised that no one has come out to pronounce their satisfaction with DirectBuy. I am SHOCKED that no one has come out to pounce on this opportunity to air their dissatisfaction.

I guess I might be the first. I got sold on the glitzy infomercials from DirectBuy and was eager to join when I learned they opened up a local store in Mountain View. My SO and I thought DirectBuy could save us tons of money on our major remodel. So, we signed up to go to their introduction meeting. There were three other couples and we watched more of their video, which was a total waste of time because we didn't learn anything more than we already learned from the infomercials. We wanted to get to the real reason why we showed up - to learn what products were available. But they wouldn't show us anything. They just wanted us to join for almost $6,000 without giving us any details of the program. My SO took out a short list of appliances and furniture he'd been researching on and asked to know if we could buy from DirectBuy. The snobbish saleswoman didn't even bother to look at the list, saying product information isn't disclosed to non-members. At this point, my SO got so upset we stood up and left without another word.

Some of the sales people at DirectBuy are real jerks. That said, if you've got a major remodel on your horizon and want to purchase a lot of name brand or high end home goods, the membership is worth it. My wife and I were members back east at a DirectBuy store several years ago. It was a good enough deal that when we relocated to the bay area and bought a home, we joined again. It's not for minor or casual purchases. You'll never make back the money you spent on your membership fee that way. But if you're looking to completely furnish and accessorize a home, you could easily save $10k or more.

We've been Directbuy members for about 7 years and things have really improved. if you are doing a remodle - you will save cash on the cabinets alone. Over the years we've bought some furniture and jewelry - mainly kept it going for when we buy another home. There's good and there's bad - but you seem to run into those kind of issues anyway.
