Alma to Sand Hill ?????

I had cause to visit an address on Sand Hill Road yesterday which is an unusual occurance for me. My ideal route was Alma to Sand Hill. Made sense to me. Until, that is, I reached El Camino. Little did I realise that I would be forced to turn right at the intersection (which the map shows as a cross roads) and be forced with plenty of other traffic to do a u turn, which meant waiting for a second green light due to the volume of traffic doing the same thing. On my return, the ideal would have been to cross ECR back on to Alma, but of course, no, the only ones lucky enough to do that were a few brave cyclists. I was forced onto the ECR traffic and mistakenly thought my best bet was to turn onto Churchill to get to Alma. Of course that was also a big mistake as the tailback on Churchill meant that once again I had to wait for the second green light.

Who makes these decisions? Isn't the object of traffic control to move traffic to where it wants to go as efficiently as possible?

I am shocked that this sensible route has been dessimated. What was the thinking of doing this? Oh yes, someone was probably getting too much traffic outside their home and wanted to make more pollution from idling cars at traffic lights and unnecessary extra minutes on what should be simple journeys. I ask you?

Why didn't you turn West on Churchill then North on El Camino Real like the rest of us who want to make that trip?

Stanford designs the Streets on their property - get used to it and quit complaining.

I'm pretty sure that was a City Council decision, but now that the new City website only has archived minutes and agendas back to 2002 you'll never know. I'm sure Menlo Park enjoys providing a convenient place for people to do a U-Turn.

I think the idea was done to discourage people using Alma Street. But it never stops me when I need to go to Stanford Shopping Center. I just do the U-Turn. Just be glad that Sand Hill Road widened and extended to El Camino. That nearly took an act of God.

This was done to prevent traffic from Sandhill Road to pour directly onto Alma. Lots of people were concerned about the traffic on Alma. So we have a conflict between reducing traffic and the environment, unfortunately reducing traffic always wins. The idea is to encourage people to take the non existing public transportation.

Poor baby!
Driver had to make a U turn and wait at traffic signals.
Call the cops! what an outrage, he was inconvenienced! There ought to be a law against inconvenience and his occasional trip across the street. To heck with other people, Driver is upset and he wants service!

I can confirm that Stanford would have connected the 2 streets, but Palo Alto was opposed to the increased vehicle traffic.

I believe the Alma intersection was designed as it is to prevent an easy route between 101 and 280 - thus reducing traffic (in theory, anyway).

OK. While I admit that it is inconvenient, I am always supportive for keeping Alma light.
