Tourism Palo Alto

Original post made by Marvin, Charleston Gardens, on Oct 4, 2007

A story in today's PA Daily News regarding the city's push to get more toruists in town:

Won't this create too much traffic (we hear this complaint about everything else so why not tourists) or this kind of traffic okay, i.e. people who will pay the exorbitant hotel tax and spend money in shops without being a "burden" on our infrastructure?

If we want the visitors that come to Palo Alto, e.g. Stanford visitors, business visitors, to spend money in Palo Alto, then we should do things that attract them. They need good transportation from their hotels to downtown and Stanford Shopping Centre. We need maps on boards round town and signs to useful places such as Caltrain station and buses. We might even need a taxi rank, or at least a taxi phone at the Caltrain stations. At present, anyone getting off a train is lost, there are no useful signs anywhere to direct visitors to where they are going. These signs need to be for cyclists as well as pedestrians getting off trains.

A visitor certainly needs a cell phone when visiting Palo Alto if they want a taxi, find a hotel room etc. when they arrive at University Avenue train station.

I suspect our City leaders are looking for high rollers who drive cars and spend money in our town; they're not looking at a potential Stanford student checking out the University.

You can easily visit San Francisco without a car and get around, but you can't do that here. We're not a very welcoming City for young people or international travelers.

Your comment about maps, sign posts, and street directions are correct - they're almost non-existent.
