Jury nullification as a tactic

Original post made by Craig Laughton, College Terrace, on Jul 13, 2013

There are some that think jury nullification can be an effective tactic to prevent effective enforcement of local laws (e.g. car campers, once it is passed). Having watched the Florida trial of Zimmerman, and without passing judgment, I like the six member jury system, unless it is a capital (death penalty) case. Jury nullification would be less possible, if there are six fewer jurors who can nullify, with a single vote. It would also reduce our obligation to be part of jury pools by about half.

I wonder how many other Californians think this is a good idea?

Let me nudge this concept forward: Who is thrilled to get a jury notice in their mail? It means you need to show up for an undetermined period of time at the courthouse, then get questioned/challenged by the attorneys...then wait to see if you are, finally, empanelled...then who knows for how long?

By reducing the number of required jurors (from 12 to 6), this would reduce those jury notices from three years to six years, approximately. Above all that, jury nullification would be reduced by half. This would reduce the power of various legal "gamers" to manipulated the system.
