Online lottery for living skills summer school.

Original post made by Paly Parent, Palo Alto High School, on Feb 18, 2014

Just seen from an email that they have an online lottery for summer school. Is this ethical? Fair? Legal?

This is a popular and necessary class. Demand outstrips supply of summer school teachers. What else are they gonna do?

No to mention that they have to offer it for free. We are lucky they are offering it at all!

First Paly Parent - why wouldn't this be fair, ethical or legal? A lottery is the best way to be fair if more students want to take the class than there are spaces. Unfortunately, its a pretty useless class for most kids.

Well, they could just not offer it. That would be ethical, fair & Legal.

If they didn't have to offer it for free and provided scholarships then they could expand it. As it is, the law says it's better not to offer it at all than to ask those who are willing to pay/support it to do so. The district is the lesser for it but what can ya do?

Palo Alto Weekly Holiday Fund

For the last 23 years, the Palo Alto Weekly Holiday Fund has given away more than $4 million to local nonprofits serving children and families. When you make a donation, every dollar is automatically doubled, and 100% of the funds go directly to local programs. It’s a great way to ensure your charitable donations are working at home.
