Paly ..eReaders?

At the PALY parent meeting they mentioned the library loans books on eReaders . Would you happen to know which eReaders work the best and which do not work that well? Kindle HD, nook, iPad with a reader app? Would the smaller kindle or kindle white work as well?

I am a parent of a sophomore and I have never heard of e readers instead of textbooks or ebooks being used in school. Is this something new?
