Composting in Palo Alto

Original post made by Helen, Palo Verde, on Jan 4, 2014

I recently started collecting food scraps in a compostable bags and was hoping the bags will be taken away with our yard waste to be composted. I was told by the people collecting yard waste that they do not accept these bags. Since I don't do self composting, I don't know what to do with these bags, except to put them in regular trash, which makes it very earth un-friendly. When I checked the city web site, I found out we are supposed to drop these off in Sunnyvale, which is completely out of my way and means driving more to get there. I wonder why City of Palo Alto does not collect compostable waste? A friend of mine who lives in Los Altos regularly put food scraps in yard waste to be collected. Why cannot we do it here in Palo Alto?
