Stanford rally falls short in Pac-12 men's basketball opener

Stanford had a chance to take control of its Pac-12 men's basketball opener in the final minutes Thursday night but never took advantage. That resulted in a 69-62 loss to visiting California.

The Cal game at home, with two Cal players injured, was pretty much a must win for a NCAA bid. Stanford has to beat the non-elite teams in the conference at home and hopefully win a few on the road. After one game, they are now faced with zero room for error.
