JLS Middle School celebrates new, two-story building

JLS looks great this year! And it's one of the few public construction projects in the area recently that finished ON TIME and without any significant inspection issues. Lots of new benches, landscaping and other nice details were included around campus. Everyone at the Wednesday event was in high spirits.

One thing I wish they would include in new works at the middle schools is some sort of climbing area. It would not need to be a young kids "play structure", more like a large scale interactive metal work of art that is okay for the kids to climb on. These kids are 11-13 years old -- they still want to climb and play (but not if it isn't cool). The basketball courts are nice, but very single purpose. Some kids don't want an organized ball game at lunch, but watching them it is clear they still have extra energy that needs an active physical outlet.

Any creative outdoor artists out there? Could be a great new challenge. When I took a group of sixth graders to a field trip at Lawrence Hall of Science, they all immediately started climbing over the large scale outdoor DNA sculpture and whale model.
