Please remove this dubious "article" on the grounds that any article that only inflames people to post comments - all of which have been removed by the editor is not an article at all but just a slap in the face to the very idea of a town square forum.

thank you.

"George Zimmerman deserves a huge apology."

Surely you jest.

A man with a record of altercations with police; oddly, a wanna-be-cop. With a record of only calling the police on African American citizens. A man who, against the orders of the police dispatcher and his own neighborhood watch rules, gets out of his car, with a loaded and cocked weapon and accosts a innocent 17 year old boy after stalking him.

Who had the right to self defense? Seems like Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17 year old, was hunted down, and had no defense against an older, heavier man armed with a gun.

Michael Savage (nee Wiener) put it well: George Zimmerman, with a loaded and ready to use weapon with the safety off, went off hunting a human and wanted to get in trouble.

He did.

The jury released George Zimmerman.

"Savage laid out his case, saying that the murder could have been avoided, but based on Zimmerman’s gun having a round in the chamber with the safety off, Zimmerman intended “to find some he could shoot or intimidate.”

“Zimmerman was carrying a Kel Tec semi-automatic 9mm handgun,” Savage said. “So? Big deal. It is a big deal because he had a bullet chambered in the gun and he had the safety off… Had he not chambered a round prior to meeting Trayvon, and had he not taken the safety off, even if Trayvon, during the altercation even if Trayvon had tried to grab the gun away from Zimmerman — had that gun not been chambered with a round and safety off, Trayvon Martin would have had to use two hands. You can’t do it with one hand.” "

- Imagine how much better Zimmerman's life would be today if he stayed in his car as instructed by the police dispatcher.

- Imagine how much better Zimmerman's life would be if he had not followed and stalked Martin after calling the police.

- Imagine how much better Zimmerman's life would be today, if he just got out of the car, kept his distance from the 17 year old and said: "Hi, I'm George, of the neighborhood watch. The police are on their way, can I help you with anything?"

- Imagine Trayvon Martin being allowed to live, as you would want for anyone's child.

I cannot predict the future, but I suspect Zimmerman will be given an opportunity to apologize in a civil trial.

To "That User Name"...It is also possible that Zimmerman may have been beaten to death had he not fired his weapon. I agree with you about your "imagine points." Z should have done exactly what you suggest.

If it were a black killing a black or white killing a white, we would have never heard of this case. I agree, the media did blow it up, and people judge without all the facts.

Did anyone see the TV interview with the lead defense lawyer? He said Z grew up with blacks and took a black girl to his prom. He also has a record of helping blacks. Why didn't the defense publicize this? He is not a racist. Sure, he profiled based upon a "thug" profile, but he is not a racist.

Plus, he is not a WASP. He is half Hispanic, which makes him a minority, in affirmative action definition.

I am glad the jury based their decision on facts, not politics or public opinion.

No, it looks like everyone was right after all, it was Trayvon Martin that got "lynched", if you must use that term.

If I had to guess I'd say there are certain moves in our judicial system like in a dance. This move was the overcharge George Zimmerman with murder instead of charging him with what he did, which was really manslaughter.

The father of Zimmerman being a judge knows how to manipulate just about any situation to get a desired outcome. There may be a few cases where public outcry would be too strong, but they mean to make this stick, probably as a message that is more pro vigilanteism than it is pro- being able to walk freely and safely in your town. What this says to the public is that there is more likely to be armed people out who will take you down if you do something questionable than pushing any kind of responsiblity on these "vigilantes". I can understand this from a hardline point of view, but it is the wrong decision ... it is a decision to continue to intimidate out of fear of black people - I think.

Zimmerman disobeyed the police and put himself in that situation, and provoked Martin by stalking him and scaring him until he thought he had no recourse but to attack Zimmerman. It's too bad that Martin did not think to dial 911 and report Zimmerman.
