The Santa Clara County Coroner’s office has identified the man killed last Sunday in a single-vehicle crash on W. Middlefield Road as Luis Sanchez-Contreras, 24, of Mountain View.

Sanchez-Contreras lost control of the Volvo he was driving in the early morning of Sunday, Feb. 21. Police said the car hit seven trees in the median of Middlefield Road between Linda Vista and San Veron avenues. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they believe high speed was a factor in the crash. A toxicology report has not yet been released.

On the Mountain View Voice’s Town Square forum, a poster identifying herself as Luis’ sister Rosie wrote, “He was the most wonderful brother who put everybody else before himself and never asked anything in return.”

  1. How many of the rest of us have done stupid things in a car? I know I have, and (knock on wood) I survived them without hurting anyone. I see two differences between this young man and me:
    1) He is younger than I am, but not younger than I was some time ago.
    2) I survived the stupid things I did, he didn’t.

I consider it to be roll-of-the-dice. There, but by the Grace of God, would have gone I. I learned from my mistakes, unfortunately, this young man didn’t live long enough to learn from his. It saddens me, but it also makes me realize how lucky I am to still be alive and how I don’t want to make those stupid mistakes any more.

  2. I think there may be something major behind all this…I don’t understand how something like this can happen. For those who know him also have seen his post on FB and I don’t know if it has you guys thinking but it sure has me thinking if maybe he was suicidal. He posted “February 21st 1965” on his status and the wierd thing is he died February 21st…

  3. For all the apologists for these kind of stunts … events … phenomenon … whatever they are, who say that everyone has made mistakes … NO … I am most likely none of you have ever made a mistake like this. Youth or not, maybe something right or wrong, but I never drove like this at any time, and it was not due to the grace of God. The only luck involved is that most of us will be lucky not to ever interact with someone like this and end up involved in their mess. I am all for trying to help, fix, educate, whatever it takes to get people to take things seriously, but I am not for just forgetting or laughing it off, or pining away because it is so sad, this was most likely an act of will, with some kind of thought behind it. Not a roll of the dice.
