A DVD burner and a Palm handheld computer were missing following a break-in at Gunn High School’s Spangenberg Theater late Monday or early Tuesday, according to police Sgt. Sandra Brown.

The theft was discovered Tuesday morning, Assistant Principal Phil Winston said.

Police said they suspect the burglar entered through an unlocked exterior door that should have been locked. The burglar broke a window to gain access to a locked office that was shared by several teachers, Winston and Brown reported.

The burglar rifled through files, stealing the burner and the Palm, Brown said. Both items belonged to the school, Winston said.

Teachers consider their offices as their second homes, he said.

“To be violated with a theft, that’s a horrible feeling. We don’t want that to happen,” he said.

Brown said police took fingerprints, but had no suspects yet. Winston said the school also does not have any leads.

He said Gunn has not been the subject of vandalism recently.

Other Palo Alto schools have, however.

Graffiti was found in a staff restroom at Palo Alto High School Monday around noon. Early Monday morning, officials at Terman Middle School discovered that a bulletin board and classroom had been vandalized.

And on Sunday afternoon, graffiti was spotted at JLS Middle School.

  1. Here is a great opportunity to suspend the Gunn Principal and three other staff members while a secret investigation is conducted. Also closing the Theater would be appropriate

  2. What, PAUSD has inadequate site security?? Surprise, surprise, surprise. Anyone who’s been at a board meeting in the last two years wouldn’t be surprised by this.

So, Why didn’t we see ‘improved security’ as one of the strategic priority options on the survey? Over the past 1-2 years this has been an important issue periodically – with the board being forced to choose between security improvments and other ‘priorities’.

    That survey stunk.

But thank GOODNESS we have a mandarin immersion program to look forward to.

Why? So that their $$$ grant can help cover the cost of the stolen DVD burner and Palm? Sorry, but that money is only good for them. Buy your own.

  4. Maybe some of the time the district staff has spent studying MI, implementing MI, traveling to China, hiring staff, evaluating books, etc etc etc. could have been spent on a security study and implementation plan? Are you saying the grant is paying for Becky Cohn Vargas, Marilyn Cook, Norm Masuda? No it is not.

  5. Burglar??? The title of this news article sounded like it was a play being presented at the Gunn Theater……….oops.

  6. So who is responsible for the operation of Spangenberg Theater? Will that person – or persons – be the subject of a criminal investigation, put on administrative leave, their computers seized, and be barred and banned from Spangenberg, told nothing, and the focus of police detectives and ‘private investigators’? Will PAUSD and city employees think twice about reporting anything? Or in this case, does the PAUSD have more sense?

  7. I am replying to the last comment, sorry a little late.

Who is responsible for the operation of Spangenberg Theater? it is the District. The district created a new position, about 2 years ago, (one more “chief”) to supervise the theater,
he is Chuck McDonnell, he is also the landscape supervisor for the PAUSD. The person physically present at the theater is a facility technician who is on hand to help event holders with technical matters.
The district controls all aspects of Spangenberg theater.
I have been a client of the theater, and this is my understanding of the way the theater is run.
