Editorial: 'Negative media' or 'negative management'?

Original post made on Mar 26, 2008

Recruiting a new generation of young professionals into Palo Alto city administration is especially challenging because of high housing costs, evening meetings and long hours, aging city buildings and infrastructure, a "hypercritical" community, high-paying private-sector alternatives — and a negative media.

Nice editorial. Typical of our city council and city manager to blame the media and as an extension of that the "hypercritical" public.
City officials do need to take a long look in the mirror before they try to shift blame to the media/public.
Or perhaps they have decide to adopt former Mayor Jim Birch's philosophy that every criticism is a personal attack and needs to be gaveled out of order.

Maybe the smart young potential employees have seen how you treat long time valued employees at the Children's theater and aren't interested in devoting their lives to a town that would turn around and treat them like criminals.

Neighbor--maybe we first need to wait until the investigation is over before castigating the authorities for investigating malfeasance at the Children's Theatre. So far they have not been treated like "criminals"--they have been relieved of duty, which happens often in these kinds of occurrences and they have been interviewed by police, another usual event.
Not sure why some people in town have elevated the CT employees to sainthood.

I guess if you have known somebody your entire life and watched them create magic and community for decades, entrusted your children to them and been entertained and enlightened by their hard work and dedication you might start to trust them. I don't know perp walk do you trust anybody? do you believe in your grandmother?

Perpwalk smiles as the Staff is carted away and now the damage is done and the Old Pros removed. You Love the word malfeasance you have posted that word 138 times in the last 2 months. But no proof but you removed the Staff for your political goal you shoul be ashamed of using the police and City managers office to do your dirty work

Neighbor---everytime there is a crime and they arrest someone, there is always someone that is interviewed that states "I cannot believe he/she did it--he was so dedicated/such a nice person/so wonder etc".
Show how you little people really know about anyone. How well do you really know the CT staff?????

I think we need to wait until the investigation is over to see what is going on. In the meantime claiming that they are being treated like criminals is ridiculous, as is elevating the CT staff to sainthood

Innocent until proven guilty is the law of our land. These people have been publcly humiliated without anycharges leveled against them and gag orders preventing them form defending themselves. surely perp walk you would hope that you would be treated better if there were any question regarding your conduct.
or would you rather be perp walked first and answer questions later, much later

> the good out of Palo Alto

Hmmm .. and what about the people who are on suspension pending the outcome of a police investigation? Or the people who were disciplined at the Utility? These folks folks are putting "good into Palo Alto"?

NEighbor--you are correct the CT staff are innocent until proven guilty--they have not been charged with anything yet, pending the outcome of the police investigation.
removed from their duties is what occurs very often in cases like this--nothing special done here to them.
And what do they need to defend themselves from if they have not been charged with anything. The gag order has not prevented their acolytes from raising them to sainthood.
Let's be quite all honest, ALL that has been done to them by the city is suspending them from their jobs--nothing else--despite what people like you would have us believe. The public humiliation that you speak about is all in your minds--cooked up to add fuel to the fire--a cheap publicity trick by people who are bent on getting these people off the hook even if they committed criminal acts.
Let's wait until after the investigations are complete before we start building shrines to them.

Ha that is funny perp walk coming from you who have led the humiliation, anxiously waiting for their "perp walk" like a member of some kind of angry mob. [Portion removed by Palo Alto Online staff]. Please open your heart and be patient and stop rushing to judgement.

To David S. Jordan--Wow 138 times I used a word in the last two months and you actually counted each time? Using a bit of fuzzy math, I see. I do not recall the actual number of posts I have made on this subject, but the total (and the use of the word malfeasance) is no where near 138.
If you want to make a point then do it--don;t exaggerate my postings for your personal gain.

Neighbor--what humiliation have I led?? People were relieved of their jobs, temporarily and told not to speak with the media during an investigation--all proper methods.
you think that by organizing groups that raise the CT staff to sainthood and vilifying those investigating said staff or daring to suggest that the staff may have done something wrong is not ignorant of the law, then you need to examine your heart. You have also rushed to judgment by claiming that the city has treated them like criminals.

What aspect of PA history are you referring to?

The Palo Alto Weekly often removes comments for apparently frivolous reasons.

Since this thread is supposed to be about the Weekly's editorial on "Negative Media" or "Negative Management" how about removing all the posts about the Children's Theater so those who want to comment about the editorial can do so without their comments being buried among comments about the theather that already has multiple threads on this site?
