An overturned big rig accident has shut down all lanes on northbound U.S. Highway 101 at Woodside Road in Redwood City and all southbound lanes are closed at Highway 92, according to traffic authorities at 511.org.
Roadways are expected to remain closed until 6 p.m., the Web site reported just before 5 p.m. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes or expect delays.
“Eastbound and westbound Highway 92 connectors to southbound 101 are closed. Northbound 101 traffic is being diverted off at Woodside Road. Southbound 101 traffic is being diverted off at Highway 92. All northbound and southbound on-ramps to Highway 101 are closed between Britton and University,” according to 511.org, a partnership between the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Caltrans, and the California Highway Patrol.
Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard have responded to the big-rig crash because the overturned tanker is leaking gasoline into center divide drains, which flow into the San Francisco Bay.
“Crews are responding to the scene now to assess the situation and see if gasoline has begun leaking into the bay,” a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.
The accident between a big-rig and a vehicle occurred at around 1:45 p.m. between the Woodside Road and Whipple Avenue exits, CHP Officer Tracy Hoover said. A Sig-alert was issued at 1:59 p.m.
Gasoline subsequently began leaking onto the roadway from the 26,000-gallon tanker tank attached to the big rig, according to Hoover.
“Gasoline is leaking into the center divide drains,” Hoover said.
Officials have shut down the lanes while hazmat crews work to clean the spill.

I just had to comment that I was stuck in the traffic that resulted from the closure and it took more than an hour to go a few blocks on Alma. Most drivers were amazingly patient and considerate in spite of the situation but I saw several drivers pull into intersections when their signals had turned red and they had no room to move through. This caused a gridlock for drivers with a green light. We had to sit there and wait for them to move while our lights turn red, green, red, etc. It made a trying situation so much worse. Why do people do this? Is it not against the law? I’ve always believed it was against the law to enter an intersection if you have no hope of clearing it before your signal turns red. Is there a ticket for this? Can a driver call in and rat on the offender?
