Bubba Gong and his dance program mark 25 years at Foothill with a trio of shows

by Rebecca Wallace

Donning an elaborate silky robe and golden headdress, Bubba Gong leads his dance students around the Foothill College studio in a line during a recent rehearsal. They follow him hand in hand, all dressed in white, doing a grapevine step.

Lovely article. I danced with Bubba for 10 years before moving to Europe. Occasionally I'm still lucky enough to catch a class when I visit California.

I took my first class sometime the year after my daughter was born. Ashamed of how I looked, I wore a maternity top to hide the baby weight I was still carrying (yeah, that worked...). Bubba's class was so different from the ballet classes I had tried. It was so much fun. We cheered each other on, and dared to try a move again and again and again without feeling embarrassed. We laughed, all the while working our butts off. Make no mistake about it, Bubba's classes are challenging!

It soon dawned on me that all body shapes really were welcome. The fittest and healthiest I've ever been in my life was when I had the luxury of taking Bubba's classes 4 days a week. The confidence I gained in those hours at Foothill are with me still.

But it is so much more. Bubba's personality lights up a room. He gives his best each and every class. The quality of teaching is amazing and continuous. There was not one single class where I felt like Bubba was phoning it in, not one time when I felt like Bubba was out of sorts.

Bubba's class is one of the highlights of my life, a huge bright spot in the midst of more family trauma and crises than can be imagined. Whatever I am today is in part because of this wonderful teacher.

Thank you Bubba! Good luck with the show! Love, love, love you!
