Paly team headed to National Science Bowl
Fast-paced, Jeopardy-like contest tests knowledge in all fields of science and math

 | Five Palo Alto High School students will spend five days in Washington, D.C. in April -- courtesy of the U.S. government -- to compete in the National Science Bowl.
The Paly team prevailed in a fast-paced, Jeopardy-like quiz Saturday, Feb. 2, at Lawrence Berkeley Labs -- one of 70 regional tournaments held across the country that altogether drew 9,500 high school students.
The quiz covered topics in astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, math and earth science, said Paly science teacher Shawn Leonard, the team's coach and adviser.
Leonard will accompany the students -- Gary Chen, Jared Filseth, Grace Lin, Jeffrey Ling and Jasen Liu -- to the Washington competition.
The U.S. Department of Energy launched the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage students to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields. I hope you enjoy your trip back East!
I am especially pleased this is a team effort - this is especially the type of activity that I favor, as opposed to secretive, individual competitive competitors that are so typical of our local high school students.
Let us know on this forum if you will hold a fundraising event - I think your community will/should support you.

Are any of these types of "bowls" open to the general public for viewing? It would be truly inspiring for my elementary-aged daughter, who loves all things science, to see these fine young folks competing.
We Palo Altans should be very thankful that we have so many resources, excellent teachers, and a supportive community.

Posted by Another mom, a resident of the Crescent Park neighborhood, on Feb 6, 2013 at 2:07 pm Thank you Palo Alto Weekly for writing a story about the student scholars in our schools.We often hear or read about the triumphs of our student athletes, indeed you select student athletes weekly. There are plenty of other kids to write about who are doing interesting things in the arts, with math and in the sciences. Why not have a student of the week in the Weekly?
