Stanford senior forward Erica McCall was named to the John R. Wooden Award Women’s mid-season Top 25 the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Wednesday.
The list is comprised of student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor, based on their performances during the first half of the 2016-17 season. The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation’s top five players, will be announced the week of the Final Four.
Since the start of her junior year, McCall is averaging 15.6 points on 50.1 percent shooting and 9.3 rebounds, one of just five players in the country averaging those numbers since the beginning of last season.
Also on watch lists for the Naismith Trophy and Wade Trophy, McCall became Stanford’s 37th 1,000-point scorer at George Washington on Dec. 21 and is currently 32nd in program history with 1,099.
Her 163 career blocks are tied for fourth at Stanford with Kristen Newlin and her 28 career double-doubles are tied for 11th among active NCAA players. McCall has had 26 double-doubles in her last 50 games, fifth most in the country over that span.
In four Pac-12 games this season, Stanford’s captain is averaging a double-double of 17.5 points and 11.8 rebounds, one of just 18 players from Power 5 conferences are averaging a double-double in league play.
An All-Pac-12 pick and Pac-12 All-Defensive Team selection as a junior, McCall checked in at No. 23 in espnW’s preseason list of the best women’s college basketball players in 2016-17 and was also named to the five-person preseason All-Pac-12 team.
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball.
Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (’79), Michael Jordan (’84), Tim Duncan (’97), Candace Parker (’07 and ’08), Kevin Durant (’09) and Maya Moore of Connecticut (’09 and ’11). Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike won the 2014 Wooden Award.
