Three local teams advance to CCS water polo finals

The season has been extended one more game for the Sacred Heart Prep and Castilleja girls plus the Menlo-Atherton boys following semifinal victories by all three teams on Tuesday night in the Central Coast Section water polo playoffs.

Top-seeded Sacred Heart Prep (21-7) will have a shot at an unprecedented seventh straight section title after the Gators defeated No. 5 Soquel (22-6) by a 13-3 count in the Division II semifinals at Menlo-Atherton High.

Freshman Maddy Johnston scored three goals with Caitlin Stuewe, Layla Waters and Camille Zelinger all tallying twice for the Gators, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

SHP (21-7) will face No. 3 Castilleja (14-7) in the title match Saturday at the George F. Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara. This will be the third meeting between the teams in the championship game. SHP previously won in 2008 and 2010.

Castilleja advanced with a 6-5 victory over No. 7 Presentation.

Castilleja coach Brenda Villa, who helped the U.S. women's Olympic team win a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Games in London, will look to guide her girls to a first-ever section crown.

Castilleja and SHP met earlier this year in a preseason game with Sacred Heart Prep prevailing, 10-4.

Against Presentation, sophomore Heejung Chung scored the deciding goal with under 1:30 to play. Anna Yu tallied twice, her second goal tying the match at 5. Stephanie Flamen, the team's only senior, added a goal as did Maddie Macdonald and Alex Zafran.

The No. 3-seeded Menlo-Atherton boys, meanwhile, earned a return berth to the Division I finals following a 9-7 overtime victory over No. 2 St. Francis (12-17). Evan McClelland scored four goals to lead the Bears (15-10). Mostyn Fero scored twice, his first tying the match at 6 with under 30 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Fero also gave M-A the lead at 7-6 in the first OT and teammate Jorge Pont followed with another goal for the eventual winning margin. McClelland provided the final goal.

The Bears will take on No. 1 Bellarmine (18-10) in the title match Saturday at the George F. Haines International Swim Center. The Bells bounced No. 5 Palo Alto (24-6) from the playoffs, 14-5, in the other semifinal at Serra. Sam Kelley and Winston Rosati each scored twice for Paly.

Saturday's showdown in the title match will be a rematch of last year's CCS finale that Bellarmine won, 9-8. M-A is looking for its second section crown and its first since 2007.

In girls' CCS semifinal matches on Wednesday, No. 2 Gunn (21-6) will look to reach the finals when it takes on No. 6 Leland (18-10) in Division I action at Menlo-Atherton at 6 p.m. In the match following, No. 4 Menlo-Atherton (17-8) will host No. 1 St. Francis (24-2) at 7:30 p.m.

In boys' Division II semifinal action at Serra, No. 2 Menlo School (22-3) will face No. 3 St. Ignatius (19-7) at 5:30 p.m., followed by top-seeded Sacred Heart Prep (24-3) against No. 5 Soquel (19-7) at 7 p.m.
