Stanford senior Mark Appel has agreed, in principal, to a contract with the Houston Astros that includes a $6.35 million dollar signing bonus according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.
Callis tweeted Saturday that Appel and the Astros are working out the final details. The Astros made Appel the overall No. 1 pick of the MLB First-Year Player Draft earlier in June.
Appel was the eighth overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates last year but choose to return to Stanford for his senior year instead.
He told the Houston Chronicle he would not sign a contract until after graduation, which was Sunday.
In addition, Stanford lost recruit Ryder Jones, when the second-round draft pick signed with the San Francisco Giants. Jones' bonus, according to Callis, was $880,000.
