To absolutely no one's surprise, four-time defending champion Menlo School is the top seed for the Central Coast Section boys' team tournament that begins Wednesday.
Perhaps somewhat surprising is the fact that all four other local teams -- Menlo-Atherton, Palo Alto, Gunn and Sacred Heart Prep -- are stuck in the same bracket as the Knights.
Thus, the chances of the Bears, Vikings, Titans and Gators of advancing are far less than the odds on Menlo successfully defending.
That quest, nonetheless, begins Wednesday with Menlo-Atherton (19-2) hosting St. Francis (15-6), Palo Alto (12-10) hosting Palma (16-3), and Sacred Heart Prep (12-10) hosting Gunn (12-7), all at 2:30 p.m.
Once again, the format will be three singles and three doubles playing round robin. A team can win a total of 18 points, but a match can be called once a team reaches 10 points.
Menlo (20-1) has won the past four CCS team crowns and five of the past six. The Knights' 11 titles are the most in section history for boys' tennis.
In his 17th year at Menlo, head coach Bill Shine takes a dual-match record of 399-42 into Friday's second round against either Sacred Heart Cathedral (12-9) or Aragon (14-6).
