A bonus for teachers and a boundary change between Addison and Walter Hays elementary schools are among topics on the agenda for the Board of Education meeting tonight, Jan. 15.
Superintendent Kevin Skelly also will officially notify the board of his talks with the leadership of Bowman International School about possible purchase of that campus, which is adjacent to Terman Middle School on Arastradero Road.
All five board members indicated last month they would support the bonus for teachers -- equivalent to 1 percent of 2011-12 salary -- which is set for a final vote tonight. In addition to teachers, the one-time bonus also applies to school staff and most managers.
Current-year negotiations with school employee unions are still underway.
The proposed Addison-Walter Hays boundary change -- first suggested last year -- is aimed at alleviating "overflow" problems that have plagued Addison in recent years.
It would move about 20 blocks out of the Addison and into the Walter Hays attendance area. Current Addison students and any younger, preschool siblings would be able to stay at Addison. The new boundaries would apply to all other entering students beginning this fall.
The affected area, crossed by both Embarcadero and Middlefield roads, is roughly bounded by Alma Street, Kingsley Avenue, Channing Avenue, Melville Avenue and the backyards between Churchill Avenue and Coleridge Avenue.
"By moving some of the current Addison households to Hays, the district can increase the chances that students who live relatively close to Hays attend Hays and students who live far from Hays attend Addison," a district staff report said.
"While it is anticipated that there will be further boundary changes related to the opening of a 13th elementary school, the area moved from Addison to Hays by this boundary adjustment is not expected to be impacted by changes related to future school openings."
A final vote on the boundary change is anticipated Jan. 29.
Following a 5:30 p.m. closed session to discuss legal matters, board members will convene for their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom of school district headquarters, 25 Churchill Ave.
