Numerous bicycle thefts have been reported throughout Palo Alto since March 28, police said Wednesday, April 18.
"The thefts have been trending upward again -- definitely," Sgt. Brian Philip said. Several bicycle thefts have taken place throughout the city since March 28. Philip said the thefts come in waves but could not say if the thefts are related. Palo Alto is a bike-friendly town and thieves know which bikes are expensive, he said.
The police department launched its "Lock It or Lose It!" crime-prevention program in late March, which encourages the public to be aware of their surroundings and to lock up valuables. Bicycles should be locked or stored in a locked garage or shed, since the crime is often one of opportunity, police said.
